The regular expressions used in nginx are implemented by the PCRE
library. You can check out existing benchmark results on the web for
PCRE. Also, you can get better performance if you enable the JIT
support in PCRE and also configure it properly on the nginx side.
BTW, the http rewrite module is not from me. It's a standard module in
the nginx core.
