Hello,

I have used OpenResty to redirect to internal locations defined in the NginX configurations. But this time I have a media wiki server running on a port which is not open in the server so inaccessible from outside. I want to route that request through OpenResty. How would I go about rerouting that request in OpenResty to the Media Wiki server? Any guidance would e really helpful.

Hi Milind, it sounds like you should be able to do this with standard nginx configuration.

When you say "MediaWiki server", do you mean a PHP application server or a full webserver running on a different port?

If it's the PHP application server then you can pass requests to it using the FastCGI module http://nginx.org/en/docs/http/ngx_http_fastcgi_module.html

If it's a web server then you can forward the requests using the proxy module: http://nginx.org/en/docs/http/ngx_http_proxy_module.html

Thank you very much Igor for this information. Yes Mediawiki is running on Apache server. I was little keen on learning how I would do it through OpenResty to have more control over the access and user privileges in the future. Is there a way I can do the routing using OpenResty also?

Hi Milind, as OpenResty is nginx packaged with extra Lua-related modules, you could do this using the standard nginx proxy module and then add access_by_lua* clauses inside your server or location blocks later, or as necessary:

https://github.com/openresty/lua-nginx-module#access_by_lua

If you really wanted to, you could write some Lua code to make subrequests or use the lua-resty-http library (https://github.com/pintsized/lua-resty-http) to do the proxying in code, but that would be re-implementing a bunch of functionality that nginx already provides. Interesting perhaps for learning about OpenResty but not necessary, and likely to perform much worse.

I am having a little difficulty understanding how I would implement 'access_by_lua_file' with the proxy module. If I have a location block like this:

location / {
    proxy_pass       http://localhost:6300;

    access_by_lua_file test.lua;
}

Would this test.lua file run before the request is redirected to localhost:6300 so I can check the request before I allow the redirection? The access_by_lua documentation says it runs after the ngx_http_access_module

Yes that's right - this allows access:

location = /access-test {
access_by_lua_block {
return
}
proxy_pass https://www.google.com/;
}

but this denies access:

location = /access-test {
access_by_lua_block {
ngx.exit( ngx.HTTP_FORBIDDEN )
}
proxy_pass https://www.google.com/;
}
